Kenyan referendum
Early voting has been brisk in Kenya in the referendum on a draft constitution. Tensions have run high for years over the controversial vote which has split the cabinet. -
Powerful minister Raila Odinga is campaigning against the constitution - angry that the new prime ministerial role was watered down late in the day. -
Also included in the constitution are moves to give women more rights - for example to inherit property for the first time. -
The new constitution will ban foreigners from owning land and individuals from distributing it. Some Maasai activists fear nomads will lose out. -
The campaign itself has seen nine deaths. Those in favour have used the symbol of a banana. -
Those against have used an orange. The campaign could see a realignment of Kenyan politics ahead of polls in 2007. -
President Mwai Kibaki has staked considerable authority on the vote. Results are expected within 48 hours. -
