American Music Awards
The American Music Awards have taken place in Los Angeles, with Mariah Carey winning the first prize of the night. -
But later in the evening Carey lost out in the favourite pop artist category to singer Gwen Stefani. -
A typically ebullient Will Smith was named favourite male artist in the pop/rock division. -
Pop star Hilary Duff performed on stage at the event, held at the famous Shrine Auditorium. -
Destiny's Child picked up two awards, but only one member of the trio - Kelly Rowland - was present at the ceremony. -
Lindsay Lohan's performance of two tracks was described by the Boston Herald as "erratic and miserable". -
But the same newspaper said an appearance by the recently reformed Eurythmics was "the highlight of the night". -
Sheryl Crow, who was accompanied by cyclist Lance Armstrong, dressed up warm for the event. -
Cyndi Lauper and Sarah McLachlan teamed up to perform Lauper's 80s hit Time After Time. -
The three-hour ceremony was hosted by comedian Cedric the Entertainer and broadcast on the ABC network in the US. -
Palestinian student protest
Palestinian teachers have been holding classes in the road outside an Israeli checkpoint in the West Bank city of Hebron in protest at intrusive searches of children going to school. -
Students at the al-Fayha girls' school and the al-Ibrahimiya boys' school have been affected. -
The schoolchildren first clashed with the Israeli soldiers on Tuesday. -
Palestinians objected to having their bags searched and being made to lift their shirts before being allowed to pass. -
Dozens of the schoolchildren tried to burst through the checkpoint, but soldiers warned them to stop. -
Five children were arrested by Israeli troops stationed at the checkpoint. -
The Israeli military said protesters hurled a firebomb and rocks. -
